Bio

Górecka embarked on her musical journey very early, being born into a family of musicians, with her mother, Jadwiga Górecka, a pianist and her father, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, a composer. This provided her with the privilege of being in contact with live music and eminent artists from a young age. At the age of four, she began piano lessons under the guidance of the famous Professor Wanda Chmielowska and later continued her studies with Bożena Dymek and Marta Czerewko.

She graduated with distinction from the Academy of Music in Katowice in 1991, studying under Professor Andrzej Jasiński, the teacher of Krystian Zimerman. At her graduation concert, she performed Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor with the Silesian Philharmonic. In the same year, she began a two-year course at the Hochschule für Musik in Trossingen under the legendary Russian pianist and teacher, Professor Viktor Merzhanov. Górecka received scholarships from the Ministry of Culture and Art and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. She is a prizewinner of several prestigious piano competitions, including the Incontro Internazionale Giovani Pianisti in Senigallia (1982), the Polish Piano Festival in Słupsk (1991), and the International Brahms Competition in Hamburg (1992).

While still studying, she engaged in an active concert career. Her debut at London's Wigmore Hall in 1994 was hailed by critics as a "pianistic triumph," launching her international career. Górecka has since undertaken numerous concert tours, including performances in Japan (in 1993 with Sinfonia Varsovia and in 1996 with the Silesian Philharmonic), the UK (in 1996 with The Great Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio and Television in Katowice), and Spain (in 2002 with the Silesian Philharmonic).

Górecka proved herself an outstanding pianist at Wigmore Hall last night. Her talent is more than just a result of having had lessons since the age of four.
There is God-given ability here. (...) Her performance of Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit was one of the most moving pieces of piano playing I have ever heard.

Anna Górecka and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki in Japan, 1996.

She performs in some of the most prestigious concert halls in Poland and around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, Osaka Festival Hall, Palau de la Música in Barcelona, Bösendorfer Saal in Vienna, Colston Hall in Bristol, Hermitage Theatre in Saint Petersburg, National Philharmonic in Warsaw, the Concert Hall of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, and the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio in Warsaw.

Górecka frequently participates in world premieres of contemporary works, with some pieces composed specifically for her, such as Piano Sonatas by Mikołaj Piotr Górecki and Tomasz Kamieniak. She has been a regular participant in the International Festival of Contemporary Music "Warsaw Autumn," performing works by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Tomasz Sikorski, Zygmunt Krauze, among others.

The recital opened with Chopin's Ballade in G minor, Scherzo in B-flat minor and Sonata No. 2. (...) Experience, expression, interpretative power, as well as the incredible
femininity of the artist emanating from each sound enchanted and united the audience, who, in gratitude for the extraordinary talent and masterful skills, rewarded her

with a prolonged standing ovation.
Noelia Salazar, EL MAŃANA

Aspecial place in Górecka's repertoire holds the work of her father, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. In 2021, she served as the editor of a music album containing his previously unpublished works, released by Boosey & Hawkes. Upon reviewing the publication Andrew Eales wrote: The 'Piano Album' is edited by the composer’s daughter, concert pianist Anna Górecka, and offers a fascinating and approachable snapshot of his evolving art. (...) Górecka provides an illuminating and exhaustive overview of the composer’s subsequent piano composing, no doubt bringing the personal insight only available to so close a family member.

She recorded all of her father's piano compositions on the album Anna Górecka Plays Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, released in 2022, which received a nomination for the Fryderyk 2023 award in the "Album of the Year: Solo Recital" category.

It may be surprising that the brilliant piano version of Górecki's Harpsichord Concerto (...) has remained in the shadowof the harpsichord version. However, it has

Phonographic activity is an essential part of Górecka’s artistic endeavors. She has made numerous recordings for radio and television and has released fifteen albums, featuring music by Mieczysław Karłowicz, Karol Szymanowski, and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, with leading Polish and international labels such as Naxos, Warner Classics, RCA IPSA, CD Accord, and DUX. Five albums featuring Górecka as a soloist have been nominated for the prestigious Polish Fryderyk Award.

The album featuring Szymanowski's compositions (...) is a credit to both the violinist and the pianist, Anna Górecka. (...) These are, indeed, what one might call

Reviews

Anna Górecka quickly made herself known to the gathered music lovers in London with a virtuoso performance of an ambitious repertoire. Selected with precision, it allowed the audience to appreciate her excellent technique combined with mature interpretation. (...) I was among many who left the concert hall impressed bythe highly talented pianist. (...) The best evidence of Anna Górecka's success was the sustained applause, to which she responded with just one encore (repeated calls of ‘mooore!’ could be heard in the hall).
Juliusz L. Engler, Tydzień Polski (London)
The Harpsichord Concerto, here performed in its piano version,
brims with a concentrated energy that initially demands
acclimatization — yet swiftly transforms into a captivating vigor
beneath the fingers of Anna Górecka, the composer’s daughter.
Benoît Fauchet, Diapason
Capriccio by Mikołaj Piotr Górecki found in Anna Górecka
a marvelous interpreter who not only managed to convey
its basic line but also all its subtle nuances. The precise quality
of sound, high intelligence, and musical sensitivity are the main
features of this outstanding pianist.
Marek Skocza, Dziennik Zachodni
Górecka is a pianist of passion and energy, occasionally recalling Martha Argerich. She is already a genuine virtuoso, with technique to burn. It’s evident at once inSchumann’s Papillons, notable for flashing octaves brilliantly executed (…) The sequence reached a natural conclusion in Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. Miss Górecka gave a fine account of its hovering, luminous textures, but seemed most at home in the more restless, turbulent passages, with their pyrotechnical challenges. These were splendidly played, setting the seal on a recital that was a pianistic triumph.
Geoffrey Smith, Country Life
Fascinating how these two very fine artists [Górecka and Bąkowski] manage with equal conviction the glorious afflauts of the [Szymanowski’s] Sonata and the perfumed garden that is the Lullaby and Roxana’s Song. (…) Lastly come the Three Myths (…) These are wonderfully played by the duo who masterfully catch the steady yet responsively pliant pacing and mystical communion inherent in these pieces. The quintessential illusion of the performance being swayed by the spontaneity of the moment is fully intact.
Rob Barnett, MusicWeb International
Anna Górecka in Sergei Prokofiev’s
Piano Concerto captivated us with her musical
maturity and exceptional technical skill.
Bogumiła Mika, Gazeta Wyborcza
The often-preached truth that the accessibility of music relies largely on the way it is performed is confirmed in this case. This time, the performance was — I must say it once again — masterful. The pianist Anna Górecka, with her rendition of the Preludes, Op. 1 and the Piano Sonata, Op. 6, emphasised the duality of the music composed by her brilliant father: prayerful contemplation and violent spontaneity at the same time.
Anna Woźniakowska
Little Requiem, Op. 66 [by H. M. Górecki], was performed by the composer’s daughter, the pianist Anna Górecka, together with the Warsaw Philharmonic. From the very first sounds of the tubular bells and piano, it was clear that Wit and Górecka understood each other perfectly on stage. The pianist played with great confidence; she was not afraid of the expressive contrasts of piano and forte, which added distinctiveness to the piece.
Joanna Lach, Gazeta.pl
Anna Górecka (...) performed superbly in the piano antipodes. An early classical, or rather Rococo style (...) was mastered by her to perfection. She was also in her element while performing the twentieth-century works. They were performed with an unprecedented flourish and impulsive temperament, but also with an appreciation for the lyrical parts.
Aleksandra Konieczna
Anna Górecka excelled in the Piano Concerto by her father.
She presented a dynamic personality that harmonized
with the slightly sharp character of this interesting piece.
Aneta Oborny, Gazeta Wyborcza
Anna Górecka performed this nearly half-hour-long cycle
[Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Haendel by Brahms] excellently,
displaying complete mastery over the entire piece, perfectly balancing the
more contemplative and dramatic moments. The latter, in her interpretation,
gripped the audience with dynamism and verve.
Marek Brzeźniak
The Piano Concerto by Górecki, thrillingly performed
by the composer’s daughter, was particularly impressive.

2. (...) Experience, expression, interpretative power, as well as the incredible femininity of the artist emanating from each sound enchanted and united the audience, who, in gratitude for the extraordinary talent and masterful skills, rewarded her with a prolonged standing ovation.

Aspecial place in Górecka's repertoire holds the work of her father, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. In 2021, she served as the editor of a music album containing his previously unpublished works, released by Boosey&Hawkes.

It may be surprising that the brilliant piano version of Górecki's Harpsichord Concerto (...) has remained in the shadow of the harpsichord version. However, it has undoubtedly found a splendid interpreter in the composer's daughter, Anna Górecka, who has the opportunity to rival Elżbieta Chojnacka.

Górecka is a juror in national and international piano competitions and conducts courses for young pianists, such as the International Piano Masterclasses in Katowice. From the outset of her professional career, she has combined her artistic activities with pedagogical work. She is a professor at the Academy of Music in Katowice and also teaches at a music high school. Her students have won several dozen awards and honorable mentions at Polish and international piano competitions.

Reviews

Anna Górecka quickly made herself known to the gathered music lovers in London with a virtuoso performance of an ambitious repertoire. Selected with precision, it allowed the audience to appreciate her excellent technique combined with mature interpretation. (...) I was among many who left the concert hall impressed by the highly talented pianist. (...) The best evidence of Anna Górecka's success was the sustained applause, to which she responded with just one encore (repeated calls of ‘mooore!’ could be heard in the hall).
Juliusz L. Engler, Tydzień Polski (London)
The Harpsichord Concerto, here performed in its piano version, brims with a concentrated energy that initially demands acclimatization — yet swiftly transforms into a captivating vigor beneath the fingers of Anna Górecka, the composer’s daughter.
Benoît Fauchet, Diapason
Capriccio by Mikołaj Piotr Górecki found in Anna Górecka a marvelous interpreter who not only managed to convey its basic line but also all its subtle nuances. The precise quality of sound, high intelligence, and musical sensitivity are the main features of this outstanding pianist.
Marek Skocza, Dziennik Zachodni
Górecka is a pianist of passion and energy, occasionally recalling Martha Argerich. She is already a genuine virtuoso, with technique to burn. It’s evident at once in Schumann’s Papillons, notable for flashing octaves brilliantly executed (…) The sequence reached a natural conclusion in Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit.
Anna Górecka in Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto captivated us with her musical maturity and exceptional technical skill.
She presented a dynamic personality that harmonized with the slightly sharp character of this interesting piece.
Aneta Oborny, Gazeta Wyborcza
Anna Górecka performed this nearly half-hour-long cycle [Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Haendel by Brahms] excellently, displaying complete mastery over the entire piece, perfectly balancing the more contemplative and dramatic moments. The latter, in her interpretation, gripped the audience with dynamism and verve.
Marek Brzeźniak
The Piano Concerto by Górecki, thrillingly performed by the composer’s daughter, was particularly impressive.
